Assessment / Testing
Psychological assessment and testing involve a combination of techniques to better understand cognitive, academic, and/or emotional functioning for a given individual. Psychological testing, or assessment, is done through observation of an individual performing tasks, review of questionnaires, and analysis of objective and standardized measures. Analysis of projective measures, such as drawings, and school observations may also be used. Psychological testing is helpful in measuring and gaining a better understanding about unobserved constructs that can help with diagnostic clarification, identification of learning difficulties or specific learning disorders, and recommendations for treatment. A useful psychological test must be both valid (i.e., providing accurate results) and reliable (i.e., consistent over time and across raters). At PCPA, we only utilize the most up to date, valid, and reliable assessment instruments.
The problems assessed at PCPA include, but are not limited to:
ADHD
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Learning/Academic problems
Disruptive behaviors
Motivation/Concentration
Communication problems
Relationship problems
Diagnostic clarification for complex psycho-social and/or behavioral problems
Typically, psychological assessment requires you to attend one hour-long intake appointment, and one or two testing appointments that may last 3-4 hours each. Coverage will be checked and relayed to the patient before services begin.
Psychological testing is only performed by licensed clinical psychologists or advanced trainees who are supervised by licensed clinical psychologists. These trainees may include: Advanced graduate Externs, who already hold an M.A., Primary Care Psychology Residents in their Internship year, or Primary Care Psychology Associates in their Fellowship year. As a general policy, cancellation REQUIRES a 24 hour notice, otherwise the patient or responsible party will be responsible for a $200 late cancellation fee.
For any questions about Psychological Assessment services available at PCPA, please contact our Director of Assessment, Dr. Margaret Christie at [email protected].
Disclaimer: Assessment sessions allowed are determined by each individual insurance plan. Should services be denied by your plan, the insurance allowance will be applied to the responsible party.
